So I tried translating the popular YOSAN KAIGI from season 17.
First off there’s my usual disclaimer… sorry if this isn’t 100% accurate. Actually, there’s a few lines I looked back on and I’m like, why did I do that? But yeah. The only way you can learn is through making mistakes, right? Second versions are easy to make.
Here’s a bunch of notes where I try to explain some of the dumb shit I did when translating. Yay.
+ Andou-sensei’s gags. I started out not wanting to ignore them and tried to come up with some kind of word pun in English for the first one, since the kids actually acknowledged that one. Mice for “mine”… uhh, but the earthworm part was bad. Then I ended up just ignoring the other word plays “chiren kamo shiren” and “suruu suru”. OH WELL. I suck at puns.
+ I spent like 30 minutes reading up on the bombardier beetle. Very interesting.
+ In 17-76, the script actually has Takeya make a mistake and say that Isaku is from sixth-year “igumi”! I wasn’t sure whether to leave that in, so I just fixed his text. But you can clearly hear that he has no idea what class his senpai is in._
+ Didn’t bother translating “moso moso”, even though it’s the easiest of the three… it’s just a bunch of muttering and mumbling. But since he’s like, part of the Holy Triangle of Speech Quirks with Monji and Koheita, I decided to just leave it alone.
+ Spent a lot of time banging my head against a wall with “teppou ikedoribi”. Just tried to translate it as is. If there’s any mistakes with the explanation for the bullet technique, shuuumimasen.
+ Turning “horoku hiya” into just “fire bomb”. Well, they are made out of a type of porcelain, but I wasn’t sure if I wanted to put it as “horoku bomb” or “porcelain bomb” … “earthenware clay pot bomb”… fire bomb comes from the translation in Total War: Shogun 2. I thought this would keep it more simple and sound good in English.
+ I see a few more mistakes with lines in 17-78 hahahaaaa. I was doing this one at like 4 am and it feels like my English was deteriorating.
+ I wanted to make Fushikizou’s catchphrase as “What a thrill” but I wasn’t sure if that would be too awkward or not.
AHHH OMG I CAN’T WAIT TO WATCH THIS WHEN I GET BACK FROM WORK :D:D:D:D
